THOMSON, Ga. -- Georgia State troopers say a train traveling eastbound collided with a car just moments after the driver escaped.

The crash happened around 2 a.m. at the East Hendricks Street crossing in Thomson.

Investigators say Robert Berry Jr. was driving his gold Nissan Altima westbound on the train tracks. Troopers say he was so intoxicated he didn't realize he wasn't on the street.

Someone noticed Berry on the tracks and immediately called 911. The officer approached Berry in his car and convinced him to get out of the driver's seat.

Just moments later, the train crashed head on into the passenger car.

Both the officer and Berry were able to get away from the vehicle before the collision. No injuries were reported.

Berry was charged with DUI, expired license tag and criminal trespass. He's being held at the McDuffie County jail.

The crossing was closed for about an hour while crews cleaned up the debris. The crossing and the railroad tracks are all clear now.
