AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Some veterans will soon need to travel to another location for emergency care.
All emergency services, including mental health services, at Uptown VA will end on Aug. 1.
VA officials announced the change this week. They say all veterans seeking emergency services will now have to go to the Downtown Division of the Charles Norwood VA Medical Center.
Horace Thomas worries about the added commute for some of his veteran brothers.
"Some don't have transportation ... and then if they relocate, the parking is really ridiculous," he said.
Officials say the center was never configured for emergency care, which is the only explanation for the closing.
