SCE&G releases report of scam targeting local customers

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- South Carolina Electric & Gas says identity theft scammers are convincing customers to turn over their personal information for federal assistance.
Molly Morris, general manager of customer service for SCE&G, says dozens of local customers are falling for the scam.
She says customers have been contacted through phone calls, fliers, social media, text messages and via word of mouth by scammers saying "that President Obama is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills."
The scammers say they need the customers' Social Security number and bank routing numbers. In return, customers are given a phony bank routing number, which they are told will take care of paying the bills.
