AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A new rating system for childcare facilities in Georgia will help parents in their search for daycares and preschools.

Quality Rated launched in January 2012. More than 600 childcare facilities in the state have voluntarily signed up for the program.

The system rates childcare facilities on five standards:
  • Director and teacher qualifications and PDR verification
  • Nutrition and physical activities
  • Family partnership
  • Intentional teaching practices
  • Teacher-student ratio

"It's certainly something I would advise expecting parents and first-time daycare to look at," said Helen Caldwell, whose sons are in the Bradley Schools.

Bradley Schools signed with Quality Rated. Executive Director Katie Tracy registered her preschools because she believes the program will help parents make better informative decisions in regards to childcare.

"They will be able to see how the state has assigned us. Eventually they will be able to see if we have a one, two or three star rating; very similar to food and hotel rating," she said.

Georgia is gathering information on the facilities registered with Quality Rated this year. Parents can ask childcare facilities whether or not they are part of the program. Star rating will available for the public in the beginning of 2013.

South Carolina has a rating system under the Department of Social Services. You can find their website here.
