News 12 On Your Side: Memorial Weekend Saving at the Pump
Posted: 11:50 AM May 25, 2012

AUGUSTA, GA-- More people are hitting the roads and saving dollars this Memorial Day weekend.

AAA predicts more than 1.3 million drivers in Georgia and South Carolina are taking to the highways this holiday. It's an increase from last year mainly due to lower gas prices.

South Carolina currently has the cheapest gas in the nation at $3.34 a gallon, which is about 25 cents cheaper than last year. Georgia gas prices are down about 30 cents a gallon.

Ethanol fuel is the cheaper option at the pump even factoring in that it's less efficient. "Well if also consider the trip that you have to make to get the non-ethanol then there is not much (of a difference). Ethanol is the better deal," Aaron Clements of C&C Automotive said.

Ethanol does give you the most bang for your buck, as long as you drive 2007 or newer vehicle. "If you get into vehicles that are older than that it does have more of an affect because the fuel lines, the injectors, and a lot of other items are not built for ethanol," Clements said.

There are plenty of ways to stretch your dollar whether you drive a new or old vehicle. "Tire pressure is very important on your fuel milage and also things like air filters and oxygen sensor. There are different things on the vehicle that you can save a huge amount of gas on," Clements said.

Make sure you do a quick inspection of your car before heading to your weekend destination. It's important to check all fluids, windshield wipers and even tires. A quick check could save you money from breaking down later.
