AUGUSTA, Ga. -- This weather may have some of you turning up the AC about now, but before you turn that thermostat way down, you might want to think about how much it will cost you.

Possibly the only thing worse than a slow-running AC is one that costs you a lot of money. That's why it's so important to keep your air conditioning unit in tip-top shape.

Each year, your AC unit goes without maintenance, it loses about 5 percent of its overall efficiency. And emergency repair, especially during a heat wave, can cost a ton.

You need to have it serviced any time the AC unit is not cooling properly or when the humidity in your home increases.

A typical service call ranges between $70 to $100.

And don't forget to change your filter frequently -- it will save you some money.

"Changing your filter on your furnace or air conditioner is one the simplest things you can do. Just remember to check it every month when you pay your utility bill. It's something that anyone can do themselves and it can save you up to 15 percent on your energy bill if you get them well maintained," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.

Whenever hiring an AC company -- as with any company coming into your home to do work -- make sure the workers are properly licensed and insured.

And here is a tidbit to keep in mind: Each degree you dial below 78 degrees increases your energy by 8 percent. So if your monthly bill, is $100, you save $8 with each degree you can stand above 78.
