ATLANTA, Ga. -- According to a news release on Georgia Power’s website, the company filed for a fuel rate reduction with the Georgia Public Service Commission.

In terms of savings for a residential customer, they say it would come out to about $8 or 6 percent on the total monthly bill averaging 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The decrease may offset the recent base rate increase customers incurred.

The company says their focus is to make sure customers and communities have safe, clean, affordable and reliable energy.

The reason for the decrease, they say, is driven by lower natural gas prices, which resulted from an increase in supply. Milder weather and a lower demand for electricity also contributed.

Hearings will be held on June 7 and 8 by the PSC with a final decision on June 21. The new rates, if approved, would then go into effect on July 1.
