AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A local nonprofit battled vandalism after gang signs were drawn onto its sign Thursday night.
Child Enrichment helps sexual assault victims seek help. Gang vandalism on the front yard sign jeopardizes the feeling of security that the organization has worked hard to establish for the children.
Executive Director Dan Hillman says they consulted a certified gang intervention specialist about the vandalism. The specialist said a 12/12 was written on the sign, indicating that the person who executed the graffiti was a new recruit in the gang, and number 12 out of that set. As the most recent recruit, he is also considered to be the weakest link. He is pressured to partake in vandalism to leave his mark and eventually prove himself as a new member of the gang.
Lars Swearingen of Print Trend in Clearwater, S.C., posted on Facebook, "I have everything that is needed to fix that sign and I would be more than happy to donate the material and the labor to fix it."
News 12 helped get Swearingen in touch with Hillman.
