Elderly man pleads not guilty to fatally shooting nephew at Augusta hospital

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Months after being released on bond, an accused murderer's case returned to court on Friday.
Charles Gorrell, 83, pleaded not guilty to killing his wife's nephew, Tim Grooms, in a hospital room at University Hospital.
As you can imagine, the family is not happy about this. The victim's brother says only one thing will make him feel better.
"Regardless of his age, he needs to be held accountable for murder," said Terry Grooms, the victim's brother.
He says the man accused of killing his brother should be in jail, but at least he feels like Friday was a baby step toward justice.
"We are pleased that he was arraigned and we are pleased that he was indicted a few weeks ago," Grooms said.
Deputies say Gorrell is the man who walked into the hospital room back in October and pulled the trigger.
The 83-year-old didn't make into the courtroom Friday morning and waited outside. His attorney, William Sussman, wouldn't directly comment on Gorrell's current health.
"Again, that's another issue we are going to have to address at another point," Sussman said.
Regardless, Grooms isn't buying the defense's argument.
"He was released on unsecured bond to his family because he was supposedly gravely ill, but obviously, four months later, he's still kicking, he's not gravely ill," Grooms said.
The Grooms family says Gorrell is getting special treatment due to this age, but Sussman disagrees.
"Well, every case is different. Every case has to be addressed differently depending on the facts, so we'll have to see how this unfolds," Sussman said.
Grooms says he and his family only want justice and don't understand why Gorrell is still free.
"Shot a man, killed him, and he's still living, essentially the same life he was living, before this ever happened. The fact is that my brother is dead," he said. "He murdered my brother and confessed to it."
Both the Grooms family and Gorrell's attorney said they don't see and end to this anytime soon.
