BURKE COUNTY, Ga. -- A Waynesboro councilwoman is out on bond after being arrested for unemployment fraud.
Burke County Chief Magistrate Sterling Wimberly says 49-year-old Brenda Lee Lewis received 11 weekly unemployment checks when she was still employed back in 2009.
A repayment plan was set up, but Lewis did not keep up her part of the agreement. The amount of money she was paid (plus interest and a fine) totals $4,295.
An arrest warrant was issued for Lewis, and she turned herself in.
This is a violation of the Georgia Employment Security Law. Lewis could be punished with up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
