AIKEN, S.C. -- Police say Kennedy Middle School in South Aiken was evacuated Tuesday morning after a bomb threat.

Cpt. Maryann Burgess with the Aiken Department of Public Safety says an 11-year-old female student emailed the word "boom" to her teachers, and it was naturally treated as a bomb threat.

Teachers were able to determine which student sent the email, and Capt. Burgess and ADPS arrested the female student and charged her with disturbing a school.

Captain Burgess said the 11-year-old thought it was a funny prank but did acknowledge to Burgess that she realized why it was interpreted as a threat to school safety.
