EVANS, Ga. -- Emily Newton thought she was walking into a town hall meeting at the Jones Creek Golf Club on Monday evening.
"We were supposed to have a town hall meeting, but we found out it's been canceled," she said.
The Jones Creek Golf Course and the Savannah Riverkeeper are suing Columbia County and 12 other defendants. They say bad engineering and construction are causing silt to accumulate in their yards and on their golf course.
The meeting was supposed to update neighbors on the lawsuit, but instead, attorneys for the plaintiffs got notices from defense attorneys.
"Stating that our attempt to have this meeting tonight is akin to us tainting the possible jury, and that if we were to move forward today, they would put forth some frivolous filings to increase the cost of the lawsuit," said Savannah Riverkeeper Tonya Bonitatibus.
Jones Creek owners let residents know about the cancellation by handing out letters. The letter stated the meeting had been miscategorized as a press conference and to avoid legal disputes, they postponed it.
"It makes me very frustrated," Bonitatibus said. "What happened to free speech?"
She's not the only one frustrated. Residents like Newton came in hopes of getting answers and left with none.
I'm very disappointed," she said. "I was hoping we'd get something resolved tonight."
