WAYNESBORO, Ga. -- The funeral for a Burke County High School football player and senior class member is now set for this coming Saturday, just two weeks ahead of graduation.
Denzell Warthen died in an accident early Saturday morning on Highway 56 near Scotts Store Road. Police say the 18-year-old fell asleep at the wheel while driving to his Midville home. He'd been in Augusta hours earlier for First Friday.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at in the BCHS auditorium.
Warthen was a member of the school's state champion football team that won their first-ever title last fall.
The school will have counselors on hand this week to help students cope.
He also had a passenger in the car; that teenager is said to have suffered minor injuries.
In a statement released Monday morning the school system said, "The Burke County Public School System wishes to convey our heartfelt condolences to the Warthen family and Denzell's many friends. Burke County High School will be very mindful regarding the needs of our students and will have counselors and administrators available to assist students as they grieve the loss of a friend and fellow classmate.
