Eating Well With Kim: New Foods and Trends in the Grocery Aisles

Reporter: Kim Beavers

This week, I have noticed the trend of yogurt continuing!

Greek yogurt has been a trend for a year or two now, but it continues to make a presence in prepared foods these days. The creamy and thick texture of Greek yogurt lends itself to dips and dressings and that is exactly where we find it in the grocery aisles.

Check out these yogurt containing products:
  • Dips
  • Salad dressings

Most of these yogurt-containing items will have half the fat and saturated fat than traditional dips and dressings.

You can add yogurt to your homemade dips and dressings as well to reduce fat, increase protein and add a touch of calcium as well. For suggestions on how to best use yogurt in recipes, click here.

Another great food find is:
  • Dave’s Gourmet Butternut Squash pasta sauce. I love this because it is just one more way to add vegetables to our plate. This sauce is high in Vitamin A, C, has 3g fiber and is reasonable in sodium with less that 400mg per serving. Enjoy!
  • Land O Lakes: Sauté Express: This product is marketed as a sauté starter for fresh chicken, fish or pork. It is a combination of olive oil and butter + spices. Personally, I love to cook with an oil-butter combo -- the butter adds a nice mouth feel, while the oil helps limit saturated fat. The sauté express comes in four flavors: Italian Herb, Garlic Herb, Savory Butter and Olive Oil, Lemon Pepper. They contain 280mg of sodium per serving and each square is two servings.

Enjoy adding some of these new items to your shopping list.

Until next time: Eat well, live well.
