Genetically-modified food is controversial -- to say the least.
My discussion is not to dispute the pros and cons of genetic modification. It is, however, a basic guide to shopping for GM-free foods. I think avoiding or not avoiding GM food is a personal decision and in my opinion it has more to do with the political and legislative issues surrounding the use and labeling of GM foods than the actual GM foods themselves.
Here are some terms that refer to genetically modified food ingredients:
Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)
Genetically Modified (GM)
Genetically Engineered (GE)
The basics of shopping for GM-free foods sound very similar to the basics of eating a healthy diet: “Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and unprocessed foods.”
You see, according to the Supermarket Savvy March 2012 Newsletter, most genetically-engineered ingredients are found in processed foods.
Another option is to purchase certified organic products, as they require GMO-free ingredients.
In addition some ingredients are more likely to be derived from GMOs than others. Ingredients of foods that are more likely to be from GMOs include corn, soybeans, flax, summer squash and sugar beets.
There are also shopping guides to assist you in your search for GMO-free foods. Check out the brochures produced by the NON-GMO Project and True Food Now. Or download the free True Food Shoppers Guide Mobile App for iPhone and Android here.
