ATLANTA -- The Board of Regents has ratified and approved Georgia Regents University as the new name for the consolidated Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University.

After public meetings, a reworked list and a lot of discussion, the Consolidation Committee came up with the name from a long list.

However, that name faces a challenge from Regent University in Virginia. There is no word on what Tuesday afternoon's decision will mean for those concerns.

"I am grateful to the Regents for selecting a name that reflects the true breadth and depth of the new comprehensive research university, which includes an aligned and integrated health system,” said GHSU President Ricardo Azziz, in a news release. “The word ‘regent’ is defined as having great power, and as an institution focused on the future, this name positions us as a leading university for quality teaching and education, with an array of academic programs to include both liberal arts and sciences, and one of only four comprehensive research institutions in the state.”
