LEXINGTON, S.C.---Lexington has approved an ordinance that effectively bans registered sex offenders from moving to the town. It will prevent sex offenders from living or loitering within 2000 feet of schools, churches, parks, playgrounds and places children might gather.

The six sex offenders currently living among Lexington's 15,000 residents are exempt.

The Georgia Supreme Court recently ruled a law banning sex offenders from living 1000 feet from similar areas unconstitutional.

Why waste the time to pass this it will be ruled unconstional, as it should. Studys have shown that were a sex offender lives has nothing to do with how victims are picked. Also study after study has shown that this type of law makes sex offenders go underground and live were they are prohibited. Futher they stop registering and that is what this law will cause to happen. Federal Dept. Of Justice statistics have sex offenders as one of the lowest groups to be re-offend with 3.5% reconvicted within 3 years of release from prison. By targeting all sex offenders this law will go out with the trash.

Your brief story is inacuurate and misleading. The ban does not prohibit them from living in Town. It prohibits them from living wihtin 2000 feet of the listed facilities. They can still live in Town if they meet this criteria, which is possible. Also, you are correct that the offenders living in Town are exempt. You are also right that the GA law was overturned. But, the GA law was overturned because it did not have a similar exemption and because it forced a man to move after he had established a legal residence in compliance with the law. The Lexington ordinance does not do that.
