MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Katia is continuing to weaken over the Atlantic Ocean and is now a Category 2 storm.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Katia's maximum sustained winds Tuesday had dropped to 105 mph (169 kph).

Forecast maps show Katia veering to the northeast away from the U.S. mainland in the coming week. But the hurricane center says large swells could affect the East Coast, Bermuda, the Greater Antilles and parts of the Bahamas over the next few days.

Katia is centered about 345 miles (555 kilometers) south-southwest of Bermuda and moving northwest at 9 mph (15 kph).

Meanwhile, a new tropical depression formed over the Atlantic Ocean and could become a tropical storm by Tuesday evening. It could pass over or near Puerto Rico by Sunday.
