FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) — The mayor of Folly Beach hopes the federal government will help re-nourish the island's beaches after they were heavily eroded by Hurricane Irene.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that Folly Beach Mayor Tim Goodwin took representatives of the state and federal governments on a tour of the beach Tuesday.

Most of South Carolina escaped damage from last month's hurricane, but Folly Beach did not.

The storm chewed away dunes under walkovers and has caused the closing of Folly Beach County Park until next year.

The area of beach called the Washout got even more washed out during the storm. There was an expanse of sand at the Washout several weeks ago. Now there is no dry beach even at low tide.
