News 12 This Morning, November 23, 2009

12:30PM UPDATE: The Brown family says, for the first time in the event's history, no one in line was turned away for a free turkey. In all, 1,200 frozen turkeys were handed out to families in need. Calling it a "Blessed Augusta Tradition" Brown's children celebrated the giveaway. The Rev. Al Sharpton, Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver, and Brown's family were among those in attendance.

AUGUSTA---As News 12 crews arrived to Dyess Park around 5:30 Monday morning, a line of people had already formed, waiting to take part in the James Brown Turkey Giveaway. The annual giveaway provides a free, whole turkey to hundreds of families in need.

The late James Brown started the event nearly 20 years ago, often handing out the turkeys himself. Today the giveaway is supported by his Foundation and by charitable donations from throughout the city. Often times Brown's children and some elected leaders take part in the giveaway.

Hundreds are expected to gather throughout today, with the turkeys being handed out until they are all gone. The James Brown Foundation also supports a toy giveaway during the Christmas season. News 12's Chris Thomas will continue our coverage throughout the day. Check back with WRDW.com for more details.

**The James Brown foundation's website says they will have a live video stream on the giveaway. We have linked the site for you on this page.**
