Voices & Vibes: Augusta-Richmond County brings Mary Murphy for Westobou event

AUGUSTA -- The annual Westobou Festival has officially begun, and the Augusta-Richmond County Library will be first-year hosts to four of the festival's events.

Library personnel were successfully able to bring Mary Murphy, director of the documentary "Hey Boo!: To Kill a Mockingbird and Harper Lee" and author of "Scout, Atticus, and Boo."

Murphy showcased her film to people of all ages who enjoyed Harper Lee's novel.

The documentary focused on Lee's early life, the creation of the novel, its historical relevance and impact during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and identified which character was an exact representation of Lee in the story.

Murphy was able to include commentary from well-known media figures and authors such as Oprah Winfrey, Tom Brokaw and James McBride.

"Hey Boo!" has witnessed much exposure from many mainstream media outlets and is expected to air on PBS in the near future.

Murphy hopes that more schools around the country will acknowledge "To Kill a Mockingbird" as socially relevant to this day and that her documentary will also be included to better explain the author's life and meaning behind the novel.
