ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) -- More than 1,000 people rallied at the Georgia Capitol and marched through downtown Atlanta to support comprehensive immigration reform and call for an end to deportation.
The crowd waved signs, chanted mostly in Spanish and listened to various speakers who urged Congress on Wednesday to come up with a comprehensive reform solution that includes a path to citizenship for the millions of people living in the country illegally.
The demonstration and others around the country were timed to coincide with a larger rally Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
Organizers say they're pleased with the turnout, given that the rally and march were scheduled for the middle of the day in the middle of the week -- when many people are supposed to be at work.
