Burke County, Ga (WRDW)---- A 14-year-old girl is behind bars tonight accused of stabbing her own aunt to death. It happened Monday night at a home on Scott Store Road just off of Highway 56 in Burke county. News12 spoke with the lead investigator on the case who says the teenager will be charged as an adult.
"It's a shock not only to law enforcement but to the community as well," that's how Sgt. Dedric Smith describes the killing of 49-year-old Sherry Lynn Mack.
"We are still in the early stages of the investigation, but from what we have gathered she is the niece of the deceased," Smith told News12.
The 14-year-old girl who lived with her aunt here on Scott Store Road will be charged as an adult.
"She may have been possibly stabbed once. She was lying on the floor on the kitchen and there did appear to be some type of struggle inside the residence when the deputy arrived," he said.
The teenage niece, who is now at a youth detention center, wasn't the only one living here.
"She lived inside the residence along with 4 other siblings,"Smith said.
The motive is not clear, but investigators do know the other kids were at home when this all took place.
"The siblings that live inside the residence range from the age of 5 to 14," he told News12.
Investigators say the alleged teen killer didn't say much, but she did show some remorse.
"She did appear to be emotionally upset and crying," said Smith.
The 14-year-old will see a judge soon to face charges of murder and possession of a knife during a commission of a crime. The four children who were at the home when this all took place are now in DFACS Custody.
News 12 has also learned the victim in this case- 49-year-old Sherry Lynn Mack was also a registered sex offender. She was convicted in Florida in 1990.
