ATLANTA (AP) -- Authorities have recovered the pilot's body and found the wreckage of a small plane that crashed in a marsh outside Savannah and are working to determine the cause.

A spokeswoman for the FAA told The Associated Press on Monday that the single-engine, 1968 Cessna 172 plane had been flying to Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport from North Carolina on Sunday when it went missing.

The pilot, whose name wasn't released, was the only person on the flight.

Officials lost contact with the aircraft at 6:55 p.m.

WTOC-TV reported Savannah-Chatham Metro Police, U.S. Coast Guard and state officials were involved in the search, and the wreckage was found around 1 a.m.

Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman Gena Bilbo tells The Savannah Morning News that divers recovered the pilot's body around 1:30 p.m.
