AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. -- A woman is accused of leaving her daughter inside a car earlier this month.

Officers were called to the parking lot of the Whiskey Road Hobby Lobby on Sept. 17 after a woman noticed a 2-year-old girl was left inside the car. The woman said she waited for 10 minutes before calling police.

The girl was strapped into a car seat behind the driver's seat with the car running. Officers say they waited for 20 minutes until the mother, 42-year-old Denise Zimmerman, came back to the car.

Officers say Zimmerman admitted to seeing the police surround her car but continued shopping anyways. She said her daughter had been sick so she thought it would be best to leave her inside the car.

Zimmerman turned herself in on Monday for charges of unlawful neglect by a legal custodian. She was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center.
