AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- What does the future hold for Augusta's city golf course?

Virginia Beach Golf management wants to take over the Patch. Augusta city leaders are expected to vote on the deal next week.

Some are concerned about fees and want the city to keep running it. The hedges are cut and the grass is greener now that the city has taken back the Patch.

"I think the city is doing a good job. They're keeping the grass cut since the last owner," said golfer Ken Hedrick.

Hedrick is a regular around these fairways. He loves to play golf here.

"I come out to use the Patch probably about two or three times a week," he said.

Next week city leaders will decide whether to lease out the municipal golf course to Virginia Beach Golf Management. Some commissioners are not so sure.

"I'm not a rocket scientist, but I have enough sense to know we have enough people to do what we need to do. We can hold people accountable," said Commissioner Marion Williams.

"We need to keep the municipal golf course. We need to keep it under the control of the city," said Commissioner Bill Lockett.

The Patch didn't look this good a few months back. The city leased out the course to another company that commissioners say just walked out on the contract.

"We spent lots of money on that. We gave away too much of the city's resources in order for that gentleman to take over," Lockett said.

"I was out here when he had it. He had kind of let it go. The city is maintaining better than he did," Hedrick said.

"If somebody privately comes in, you'd think the fees are going to go up some. Hopefully, they don't go up a whole lot," Hedrick said.

"If they're running it and making money, why can't we can look at it and do the same thing?" Williams said.

The fate of the Patch will be decided by the batch of commissioners in just a few days.
