NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- The news is quickly spreading.
"I'm happy, and I suspect everyone else is happy as well," said Sammie Williams of Trenton. "We just appreciate the convenience it's going to bring to the area."
Williams is just one of many who've seen the sign along Edgefield Road near Exit 5 in North Augusta.
"Well usually I come down here to Food Lion or we go to Walmart in North Augusta, yes."
But soon, Williams will have a brand new Walmart Supercenter closer to his home in Trenton.
The sign says it'll be part of a larger shopping center built on what's now a huge open field across from Sonic on Edgefield Road, which is north of I-20 exit 5. The sign says outlots are available, too.
"Well, that's the great thing about Walmart," said North Augusta City Administrator Todd Glover. "You know, they never just come by themselves. They always bring a lot of development around it."
Glover actually didn't know about the news until Monday evening.
"I actually saw it on your news report [Monday] night," he said.
Now, he's ready to welcome the Walmart with open arms.
"Well, this is probably, residentially, the highest growth area in the city," he said.
Glover says even though there's already a Supercenter just 5 miles down the road, this location would serve people north of I-20, including people from Trenton, Merriwether and even some from Edgefield, too. He says the other Walmart will still do well. Glover says the Knox Avenue location is the closest Walmart for many people across the river.
"Just like Aiken has two Walmarts, I think our community can certainly support two," he said.
"With all the new housing development, we're really in a very progressive area right now. It's exploding. It is exploding," Williams said.
News 12 spoke with Joel Presley, realtor of the property. He says the developer is still formulating a completion date. He says they've already heard from a number of other large national retailers who are interested in moving to the shopping center.
Glover says the developer told him the construction should begin toward the end of 2013.
