Victims feared for their lives after crooks kick in door

HEPHZIBAH, GA (WRDW)---- "She was literally shaking. She was that afraid," said Mechell Alexander.

Alexander was online Thursday night when out of no where, she heard screaming coming from outside her home on Sidesaddle Court.

"Help me! Help me! I looked out my window first and opened my door and this lady said please help me. Somebody just robbed us, held a gun to my head, and made me crawl to the back room," she told News12.

According to an incident report, after the gunmen kicked in the front door they yelled, "Richmond County get on the ground" and "Give us your money and jewelry". The crooks got away with bracelets and a laptop, but Alexander says her neighbors were worried something even more valuable would be taken.

"She said she didn't know what to do and she just thought they were going to kill them," said Alexander.

Sgt. Shane McDaniel with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office says these types of crimes aren't common, but do happen more than you think.

"Just from my experience of being in the criminal investigation division anywhere between 3 and 6 a year." he told News12.

McDaniel says calling dispatch to confirm a real deputy or officer is outside your door is ok, but says you can also check it out yourself. He says always look for the whole uniform.

"The badge, his name tag. You'll hear a radio in the background. You might even be able to see the patrol car outside," said McDaniel.

Alexander says she's glad no one was seriously hurt, but despite that she's taking every step to make sure her house is not next.

"We just make sure our doors are locked and our windows are locked. We do have a 120 pound rottweiler that's in our house, so I think that's a big deterrent," she told News12.

McDaniel says close to 300 fewer homes have been burglarized this year, compared to last. He says neighborhood watches and community policing are a big reason for the drop
