AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- University Hospital is hoping to move into Aiken County with a new facility.
University Hospital’s board approved spending $2.7 million to build a prompt care facility in Aiken on Silver Bluff Road. The building will sit on land that 7.2 acres that University already owns.
“University sees more than 20 percent of our patients from Aiken, so it just makes sense for us to provide care for them closer to home,” said Scott Ansede, vice president of University’s Professional and Provider Services.
University says that the hospital could upwards of 9,000 patients the first year of operation. By the fourth year after the facility opens they could see as many as 14,000 patients.
“Some people only prefer university hospital,” said Crystal Kirkland. “Some people only prefer going to Augusta so for it to be over here. I just think that's wonderful.”
Construction on the facility is expected to begin in July 2015 as long as the planning commission and Aiken City Council approves of the plan.
