Unemployment rate increases for CSRA, Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Georgia Department of Labor announced that metro Augusta’s unemployment rate increased to 8.4 percent in May, up eight-tenths of a percentage point from 7.6 percent in April. The rate was 8.6 percent in May a year ago.

The rate increased because the number of unemployed people rose by 1,850, primarily because of the loss of temporary seasonal jobs connected to the Masters Golf Tournament.

Also from the Georgia Department of Labor, the unemployment rate in the Central Savannah River Area increased to 9.3 percent in May, up eight-tenths of a percentage point from 8.5 percent in April. The rate was 9.6 percent in May a year ago.

Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May was 8.3 percent, up from 8.2 percent in April. The rate was 9.1 percent in May a year ago.
