UPDATE: Coroner confirms death of 2-year-old in Appling

APPLING, Ga. (WRDW) -- The cause of death has been released for a toddler who died in Columbia County last week.

Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins says 2-year-old Sky Allen died of stab wounds to the neck.

The child's mother, Marina Middlebrooks, has been charged with murder. Middlebrooks was arrested around 2 p.m. Monday and was also charged with first-degree cruelty to children.

Middlebrooks was taken to the hospital after the mother and daughter were involved in an accident May 2 on Ray Owens Road. According to the incident report, she also had lacerations.

Officials say Middlebrooks was driving the SUV, which struck a tree head on.

APPLING, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Columbia County coroner has confirmed a 2-year-old died after a wreck on Thursday.

Coroner Vernon Collins says Sky Allen was pronounced dead after the accident but that they are not sure if the accident is the cause of death.

The wreck happened Thursday afternoon on Ray Owens Road in front of North Columbia Elementary.

Collins says the child was unrestrained in the front seat of an SUV that was being driven by her mother.

The child's mother, Marina Middlebrooks, was taken to the hospital. She is said to be in stable condition.

No charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.

The toddler's autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
