Thomson company pays OSHA penalties after work-related death

MCDUFFIE COUNTY, Ga. -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued five citations to a company in Thomson after a work-related death in August.
OSHA Spokesman Michael D'Aquino says they originally proposed $21,600 in penalties to Two State Construction. After a settlement was reached with the company, it was reduced down to $13,050. The penalty has since been paid in full.
Four of the citations were serious and one was considered to be "other-than-serious."
According to OSHA, "A serious violation occurs when there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard about which the employer knew or should have known."
An other-than-serious violation "has a direct relationship to job safety and health, but probably would not cause death or serious physical harm."
Edward Chambers, 61, died back in August after a 500-pound piece of equipment fell on him. The chain hoist fell from a beam about 18 feet before hitting Chambers.
