AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Richmond County School Safety Officers are on alert.

Chief Alfonzo Williams sent an email to all staff about recent car burglaries on school property.

Officials aren't sure if the break-ins are connected or who the suspects are. School is usually the place where young minds go to learn the lessons of life. For three Richmond County Schools, it's become a popular place to steal.

"Theft is common, whether you are working as a school police or a municipality," said RC Police Chief Alfonzo Williams.

Richmond County School Police Chief Alfonzo Williams monitors the camera's for all the schools in the district. He said someone broke into three cars in a matter of two days.

"Deer chase, Jamestown and Morgan Road is where we've had some activity. We don't know who the suspects are," Williams said.

Thieves made off with a cell phone and a laptop from one car alone. Some of the schools camera's can actually monitor the parking lot while others don't.

"We certainly don't want any of it. So, we're going to take a proactive step and try to resolve it," Williams said.

News 12 did a parking lot sweep of our own. All the car doors were locked and the valuables were out of sight at Jamestown Elementary School.

However, at A. R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet High School we found three unlocked car doors and saw things like shoes, sunglasses and hats from the window.

Officers said thieves look for open doors, windows not rolled up all the way and basically anything of value they can see in your car.
