SWAINSBORO, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Emanuel County Sheriff's Office says five students have been arrested after reports of a gun on school property Thursday.

The Sheriff's Office says a staff member was alerted to the possibility of a student with a handgun at 10 a.m.

Local law enforcement was contacted, the accused student was isolated and the school was put on lockdown for three hours while the search continued.

No weapons or firearms were found on the campus.

The Emanuel County Sheriff's Office says gang activity among students motivated the rumor and that the five arrested students, all juveniles, will face charges related to gang affiliation.

Initial report:

SWAINSBORO, Ga. (WRDW) -- Superintendent Erma Jenkins says Swainsboro High School is on a "modified" lockdown after students reported talk of a gun in the school on Thursday.

The Swainsboro Police Department and the Emanuel County Sheriff's Department searched the school but have not found any weapons at this time.

The Swainsboro Police Department says there are suspects in custody for questioning and that this incident could be gang related.

Students are being held in their classrooms while searches are being conducted.

Jenkins says the modified lockdown restricts movement in and out of the school. She says no one has seen a gun and that no threats have been made.
