AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Pieces are finally starting to fall into place about what happened the morning of June 29th at Augusta State Medical Prison.

"When they were leaving and going to breakfast, Tyrafred Campbell, who is an inmate there, went into the cell where Shannon Levi Grier was sleeping and attacked him," GBI Special Agent Patrick Morgan said.

That's a slight deviation from earlier information from the GBI saying Grier had been killed after a fight with another inmate. Last week a source inside the prison and Grier's own mother told News 12 otherwise.

Today the GBI confirms what we've heard all along, that shannon was asleep in his cell when he was killed. Agents also confirm the fight wasn't a physical one.

"I can't confirm or deny that they were in a relationship," Morgan said.

Shannon's mother, however, tells News 12 they were.

"The same person Tyrafred Campbell a.k.a. Ray Ray had called me on several different times crying to try to get me to convince Shannon to get back with him, to stick with him," Leisha Givens said.

"They had been in fights before. They separated them in the dorms, and they put him back in the same dorm again but separate sides," a source inside the prison told News 12.

The coroner says Grier was stabbed multiple times with a homemade knife. The GBI says they have that knife and are testing it as evidence.

"The term they use in prison is called a shank. They can make these things out of anything they can get their hands on," Morgan said.

When News 12 asked how many times Grier was stabbed, he said, "I know it's more than ten."

Grier suffered at least 10 stab wounds to the torso and neck. Eleven days later, there's a warrant for Campbell's arrest.

When News 12 asked why it took so long to make an arrest, Morgan said it had to do with a discrepancy with county lines.

"The county line splits the actual building we were in right down the middle, so that's one thing that took us a couple of days," he said.

They finally determined the crime happened in Columbia County. Campbell has been transferred to another prison in the state for now and actually hasn't been formally arrested for murder yet. They hope to bring him back to Columbia County next week. Until then, he will continue serving his current 20 year sentence for Armed Robbery and Aggravated Assault.

Tyrafred Amira Campbell will be brought to Columbia County to be formally charged, then given back to state custody on his previous charges pending the murder trial.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A man who is already in prison is now facing a murder charge for allegedly killing another man at the Augusta State Medical Prison, the GBI said.

Tyrafred Amira Campbell will be brought to Columbia County to be formally charged, then given back to state custody on his previous charges pending the murder trial.

Shannon Grier, 29, was killed on June 29 at the Augusta State Medical Prison, the coroner confirmed. Investigators said Grier was stabbed multiple times with a homemade knife after getting into a fight with Campbell, the GBI confirmed.

Officers say the two were housed in the same unit at the prison.

Campbell inmate was moved to another state prison for security purposes during the murder investigation, law enforcement said.

In 2007, Grier was convicted of aggravated child molestation and aggravated sodomy charges in Fulton County. He was serving a 25 year sentence when he was killed.

News 12 spoke exclusively to Grier's mother and an inmate about the murder.

Campbell was serving in prison for three armed robbery and one aggravated assault charge, according to records. He was serving a 20 year sentence as of 2011.
