MCCORMICK COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- We now know the name of the man accused of stealing one of the two WaveRunners involved in a fatal accident last month.
The McCormick County Sheriff's Office sent us the incident report this morning. It shows investigators are charging 27-year-old Jonathan Newman with one count of grand larceny.
Deputies say 45-year old Lisa Gepfert was driving one of the Yamaha Waverunners toward the shore at Lake Thurmond, when she hit a rock and flew into a tree. The incident report does not say that Gepfert was involved with the theft of the waverunners.
The deadly crash happened back on June 8. The owner of the waverunners reported them stolen and DNR agents recovered them at the crash site that day. One is worth $8,500 and the other is $9,000.
Newman is out on bond after being arrested.
