Suspect crashes into Savannah River after chase

RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- A man is in custody after leading Richmond County deputies on a chase that ends with him crashing into the Savannah River.

Friday, deputies responded to a call at Lumpkin Rd and Hwy 56 for shots fired.

A BOE officer arrived at the scene and followed the car to the Lock and Dam and tried to perform a traffic stop.

Deputies say the driver, Henry Church sped off when the officer approached the vehicle.

Church drove through the Lock and Dam park into the Savannah River.

Authorities say he got out of the vehicle and swam into Aiken County where he's being detained.

Church has outstanding warrants in both Richmond Co. and Burke Co.
