RICHMOND CO., Ga. (WRDW)--As meetings start on the possible closing and merging of schools in Richmond County some parents say they don't feel their voice will be heard at the town hall community input meetings.
"Absolutely, I mean they prove that they don't want parents voices involved," said Monique Braswell, mother of four.
But Dr. Frank Roberson, Richmond County schools superintendent says that's not the case.
"Whatever they're hearing that they're not going to be given credibility in this process--I reject that. It's not true," he said.
Roberson tells me he's already getting parent concerns to his office.
He says town hall meetings are no different--parent concerns are being considered.
"I've had very very useful dialogue with those parents who've contact me," Roberson explained. "And their comments have already been taken into consideration. They should see reflected in our plan the comments that they've already shared with me."
At the first town hall meeting on the idea of merging Murphey Middle and Josey High students, parents didn't hold back.
"These are children," exclaimed one parent.
"Just the thought of her coming here, I've been sick ever since i heard it," shared another parent.
Roberson tells me at this point nothing is set in stone.
"There are no solid strategy or plans at this particular point," he said. "We're in the recommendation phase."
And after last night's meeting, where another parent exclaimed "We don't want this!" Roberson says the plan to include parent concerns in their decision making stays the same.
"We plan to integrate the concerns in the recommendation that we take to the board," he said.
The next meeting is tonight at Craig-Houghton starting at 6 pm. It's focused on the possible closure of Collins Elementary.
