AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Superintendent Dr. Frank Roberson has issued a formal letter of reprimand to the teacher who allegedly distributed fliers with the N-word on them to students as part of a Black History Month lesson.
Josey High School teacher Lori Myles is said to have 26 years of teaching experience and is certified at the highest state level.
Roberson says Myles handed out the fliers as a means of disciplining students.
"Many students concluded that the fliers were degrading and inappropriate," said Roberson in the letter.
Roberson goes on to say: "While it is a necessary and expected function of a teacher to correct students who misbehave, the manner in which you chose to do so on this occasion is not only astonishing, but is unprofessional, uncalled for and inappropriate."
In the letter, Roberson says he did not believe Myles' intent was malicious but that if she "should exhibit similar inappropriate behavior as outlined herein in the future, further and stronger discipline will result, including the possibility of my recommendation for suspension or termination."
The flier came in two versions -- one with Rosa Parks and another with Martin Luther King Jr. It states: "(Name) was an N-word if ..." and students were prompted to sign the fliers under the following statement, "I have this letter because my actions, my life and my ways show that (name) wasted her time. Thanks for nothing, my N-word. Why did you do such a thing? Here's my signature to prove you wasted your time, (name)."
Roberson says many parents complained to the principal after the incident.
"To me it's degrading to the child, it's degrading to Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King," said parent Rosa Jennings to News 12 in an interview last month. "To me, it's degrading to everybody black or white. It doesn't matter the color that the person is, you shouldn't do anything like that."
Roberson says when presented with the letter, Myles refused to sign it.
