Augusta, G.a. (WRDW) - If you drive fast, expect to get pulled over, even faster.
"When the lanes are clear, i just go and drive, don't look at the speedometer," says Jamie Hunter who drives on Richmond County roads.
If you ask her about speeding, she's not shy about how she drives.
"I've gotten pulled over several times, and i tend to be heavy footed," she said. "Traffic is always slow moving and i tend to feel like people don't know how to drive."
She's cautious and careful but sometimes, speed goes out of her mind and the minds of many others too.
"If they were speeding, they were speeding, i can see the speed limit sign I'm sure just like everybody else can," said Hunter.
Last year, there were close to 10,000 speeding tickets issued.
This year, Richmond County has already handed out 10, 209 citations.
"Most of the people getting these speeding tickets are going 15 miles an hour or more," said Lt. Lewis Blanchard with the Richmond County Sheriffs Office. "It's not just about generating funds, it's actually about getting voluntary compliance for people to slow down."
And it's about safety, not only for traffic but other areas of enforcement.
"The sheriff has taken the traffic division and basically focused them on traffic which has allowed the road patrol and other areas to focus on community oriented policing," said Blanchard.
Those deputies who focused on traffic in the past, now patrol crime on the streets. Blanchard says things have drastically changed.
"Murders are down 50 percent, robberies are down, burglaries are down, it's kind of all intertwined, traffic enforcement really does a lot more than just deal with speed," he told News 12's Patrick Price.
It's a problem for many but now folks like Hunter know Richmond County is just trying to keep everyone safe.
"It's definitely an advantage that other divisions can focus on other things such as crime and stuff," said Hunter.
