AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A man and his father-in-law have been indicted after a months-long investigation into illegal gambling activity.
Hemant Phutane, 36, and Mukundlal Jayswal, 57, were indicted for commercial gambling, keeping a gambling place and possession of a gambling device.
The arrests were made after undercover officers discovered video gambling machines were being operated from inside the C-Mart Gas Station on Mike Padgett Highway. Phutane is the store owner, while Jayswal is the store clerk and father-in-law of Phutane.
Investigators say cash payouts were being made. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says while most video gambling machines are legal to operate, cash payouts are not allowed.
Investigators confiscated the video gambling machines and $56,000 in cash last month.
