AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- The security contractor at the Savannah River Site announced furloughs for some of its workers citing a "lapse in appropriations."

The Department of Energy instructed Wackenhut Services Incorporated (WSI-SRS) to perform only activities necessary to protect DOE security. The Savannah River Operations Office said some employees will be furloughed until Congress refunds the department.

WSI officials tell News 12 about 270 of 706 employees would be impacted by the furloughs.

Barricades 8 and 10 will also be closed due to the shutdown, according to the Savannah River Operations Office.

Starting midnight on Oct. 13, Barricade 8 (Road 2 and Highway 125) and Barricade 10 (Road 1 and 1A, Augusta side) will be closed until further notice.
