AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- An Augusta teen is dead and a 21-year-old is in the hospital after an overnight shooting. Detectives are looking for the person responsible.
Marquez Eubanks, 19, died from a gunshot wound, and now, neighbors who live on the south Augusta street where it happened say they're hoping the shooter is caught soon.
One neighbor told News 12's Laura Warren, "When the shooting was going on, and the people were running, I took cover. I hid myself in the hallway so if the bullets were flying, they wouldn't fly through my window or my door and hit me."
She is still too shaken by Thursday night's events to show her face, but she says she watched as car after car showed up to a rowdy party in her neighborhood last night. She and another neighbor decided to call the police as things started to get out of hand.
"The police arrived during the shooting. When the police pulled up, during that time of him crossing the street, the shooting started," she said.
The shooting left Eubanks dead and 21-year-old Jeremy Whitehead in critical condition. Eubanks used to be a star football player at Laney Walker.
Another neighbor who lives across the street, Margaret Hopkins, was also home as the party raged on. Her son told her to hide when things started to get rough.
"He said, 'Mama, you better get back there in the back. There's going to be some shooting.' And about that time, they started shooting," she said.
Hopkins has lived in the Kensington neighborhood more than 40 years and says things have definitely changed.
"My car was stolen, and then we got it back and I've got it fixed now. Then my neighbor across the street car was stolen, and hers was burned," she said.
She's hoping crime and violence like she witnessed last night doesn't become commonplace in her once quiet neighborhood.
There are no suspects in custody at this time. If you know anything, you're asked to call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at (706) 821-1080.
