EDGEFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- The Federal Bureau of Prisons has identified the prisoner who escaped on Tuesday.
Officials say Waltez Latham of Kingstree, S.C., went missing from the prison around 3:15 p.m. Latham was convicted of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine. He was scheduled to be released on Aug. 16, 2019.
The Federal Correctional Institution is 25 miles north of Augusta and is a medium security facility. The facility also has an adjacent camp that houses 500 minimum security male offenders, which is where Latham escaped from.
Investigators say Latham got away into the woods when no one was looking. He is not considered to be armed or dangerous and has not been captured at this time.
Latham is 6 feet tall, weighs 182 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.
