School officials: Reports show Terrace Manor is safe

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Conditions at a Richmond County elementary school are safe, according to documents released from the school system on Friday.

Questions about Terrace Manor Elementary School's safety were thrust into the spotlight after former principal Hartley Gibbons had an outburst at a Richmond County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday. He claims there is mold and asbestos inside the school and that the school wasn't getting any help.

Gibbons was escorted out of the meeting. He was also taken out of the school on Wednesday. Gibbons announced his retirement Thursday afternoon in a meeting with school staff members.

The school district has released the following reports and results:

  • March 6, 2012: No asbestos detected in report by Alternative Construction & Environmental Solutions, Inc. Click here to read report.
  • June 13, 2012, and June 14, 2012: Worn flooring was removed from the school as is done each summer for all of the the district's schools in report by Alternative Construction & Environmental Solutions, Inc. Click here to read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 of the report.
  • Sept. 24, 2012: No "visible evidence" of mold growth found on "visible surfaces" in report by Alternative Construction & Environmental Solutions, Inc. Click here to read report.
  • Nov. 7, 2012: Georgia Department of Health says the school system handled the mold complaints properly and that there were no signs of mold inside the building. Click here to read report.
  • TBA: Another test by Alternative Construction & Environmental Solutions, Inc. was completed on Nov. 7. Results have not been released at this time.
