HARLEM, Ga. (WRDW) -- The new interim police chief for the City of Harlem is Gary Jones, who is the previous Sardis police chief, according to Harlem City Manager Jason M. Rizner.

Jones served as the Sardis police chief for the past two years, Rizner said.

Jones was previously the interim director of the Augusta Youth Development Campus at the request of Gov. Nathan Deal, Rizner said. Jones has over 25 years of law enforcement experience, which includes working within the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Jones is a Harlem native and started his law enforcement career with the Harlem Police Department.

"We are confident that [Jones'] knowledge, experience and abilities will serve the department and the city well," Rizner said in an email. "The city plans to evaluate the situation going forward and will, at a later date, make decisions regarding a formal application and interview process."

Rizner said Jones will serve part time until his notice period with the City of Sardis is in order. Starting May 6, Jones will be with the Harlem Police Department full time.
