SALUDA, S.C. (WRDW) -- A South Carolina town was in mourning on Monday as word spread of its mayor's Easter morning death.
Saluda Mayor Frank Addy Jr. was found dead Sunday at his family's Lake Greenwood home.
The Newberry County coroner says he took his own life.
Mayor Addy was the subject of an ongoing SLED investigation, but now that file is being closed. Meanwhile, the community is coping with the loss.
"No husband, no son, no daddy, no mayor," friend Chris Bosket said.
That is everything the town of Saluda lost when Addy took his own life Sunday morning.
"Tough day for Saluda," Bosket said.
Bosket has lived in Saluda for almost 50 years. He says he couldn't believe the news.
"It was kind of devastating. It was kind of shocking that, you know, he would take his life through this situation," Bosket said.
Addy was being investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
"Mr. Addy was under a preliminary investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division because there were allegations that were raised of improprieties in his duties as mayor of the town of Saluda," SLED agent Thom Berry said.
A local newspaper published a report questioning almost $38,000 in mileage reimbursements he received from the town. Addy claimed he drove more than 48,000 miles for economic development for Saluda last year.
Now that he's gone, the investigation is going away, too.
"Since Mr. Addy is deceased, we will be closing that file," Berry said.
"We seen a little bit of writing in the paper about it. We really didn't know what had got to it. But we didn't know it had gotten this bad of a situation," Bosket said.
Bosket says now he's thinking of Addy's kids and how they'll always remember Easter Sunday.
"They'll always remember that day. The day Jesus rose, and the day their daddy died," Bosket said.
SLED says details on the investigation are still limited until they officially close the file. Berry says that should happen within the next couple of days.
