DOE announces possible furloughs, layoffs at SRS as result of sequestration

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- News 12 has received the official letter from the Department of Energy deputy secretary to Gov. Nikki Haley about the effects of sequestration.

"As a result of sequestration, the department's overall budget has been reduced by nearly $1.9 billion for the remainder of the fiscal year. For the state of South Carolina, the department's currently preliminary analysis of the impacts of this reduction is that those impacts will include the following:

  • Direct reductions to the department's contractors in South Carolina are estimated at $107 million.
  • As as result of this decrease in funding, we understand that contractors may be forced to furlough or lay off more than 2,180 employees in South Carolina, beginning as early as April 1, 2013."
