UPDATE: SRR releases information on coming layoffs

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. -- News 12 spoke to SRR Spokesman Dean Campbell on the layoffs announcement.

Campbell says everything with the SS VSP program is voluntary.

He says no targets have been set for the numbers of personnel involved or the amount of money saved with this program.

Campbell says they expect about 50 employees to participate.

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. -- Savannah River Remediation has announced it will begin another round of layoffs soon.

The liquid waste contractor has been at the Savannah River Site since July of 2009.

Employees are going to have the choice between leaving voluntarily or retiring by Oct. 8 to participate in the SS VSP. According to the news release, workers in this program will receive "severance of one week’s pay for every full year of eligibility service, up to 26 weeks."

The statement cites realigning the workforce "to ensure we have the right skills on the right jobs" as "some projects come to a close and budgets continue to be reduced."

Here is the statement in its entirety:
"Beginning today, SRR will initiate a workforce restructuring program. SRR has received DOE approval for a Self-Select Voluntary Separation Program (SS VSP) as part of a workforce management initiative to balance costs and resources.

SRR has accomplished much since taking over as the SRS Liquid Waste contractor in July 2009. However, as some projects come to a close and budgets continue to be reduced, we have to realign our workforce to ensure we have the right skills on the right jobs.

The window to participate in the SS VSP opens September 24, 2012. Employees will have approximately two weeks to volunteer to leave the Site or retire as part of this initiative. The window closes at 5 p.m., October 8, 2012. The program is open to all permanent, full-service SRR employees.

Employees who apply and are approved for SS VSP will receive severance of one week’s pay for every full year of eligibility service, up to 26 weeks. In addition, employees may be eligible for medical coverage under the DOE Displaced Workers Medical Benefits Program, if they are not eligible for the retiree medical benefits or other medical benefits. Eligible employees will also be able to retire under the optional retirement provision of the SRNS Multiple Employer Pension Plan, consistent with the terms of that Plan.

After the window closes, all participants including those who are retirement eligible will depart from the Site by October 31, 2012. A small number of employees may be asked to stay for a longer period of time to help complete a project or ensure an orderly turnover.
