South Carolina, Georgia receive more than $1M in clean vessel funds

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina is receiving more than $1.1 million from the federal government to help handle wastewater from recreational boaters.

The grant was awarded Wednesday by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the federal Clean Vessel Act.

The money will allow the South Carolina Division of Marine Resources to renovate existing marina pumpout units and boats as well as to buy seven new pumpout boats to handle wastewater from recreational boaters. The pumpouts let boaters discharge the sewage holding tanks in boats.

About three-quarters of the money will be used along the South Carolina coast.

Georgia – Inland $113,886 – The Georgia Division of Wildlife Resources plans to construct 4 new inland pumpout stations at Lake Allatoona, Lake Lanier, Carters Lake, and Clarks Hill Lake. They will also continue their ongoing CVA boater education program.

South Carolina – Coastal $757,264, Inland $382,500 – The South Carolina Marine Resources Division plans to renovate 15 existing fixed pumpout units, renovate 5 pumpout boats, purchase 4 new pumpout boats, purchase 1 floating restroom, and provide operations and maintenance for 18 pumpout boats along the coast. Inland, they plan to renovate 6 fixed pumpout units, renovate 3 pumpout boats, purchase 3 new pumpout boats, purchase 1 floating restroom, and provide operations and maintenance for 8 inland pumpout boats. They will also continue their ongoing CVA boater education program.
